The most important thing for you to notice is the two green power bars (2 on the screen). They represent the overall strength of both factions. The main reason is that you will always have multiple allied units, so you don't have to rely on your skills and equipment alone. The second group is the tasks in which you will have to capture the sector by destroying all enemy troops. Remember - all this is optional. You don't need to participate in any of the subqueries if you don't want to. You can only focus on exploring the swamps, finding artifacts and opening caches, but the only way to weaken the second organization is to kill as many renegades as possible.
You will have to keep attacking the renegades by completing subqueries or destroying their camps yourself until you can weaken them enough. I would not recommend participating in a new competition right away. Focus on killing them for a few more minutes so that you don't have to worry about returning to this quest if your allies are killed during that time.
