What’s holding your small business back?

Freelancers stuck on something holding their small business back can this week attend more than 30 locations around the UK to receive free advice on the issue from experts in the field.

Addressing individuals and start-ups, the UK’s leading accountancy body said small businesses, of whatever hue, could receive a complimentary consultation on a business issue of their choice.

Although a wide range of topics will be covered at the ICAEW’s Business Advice Service events – from tax and compliance, to legal and cashflow concerns, every attendee is eligible for the personal consultation, typically lasting an hour.

“Following the initial consultation, you are free to end your association with the firm [that advised you],” said the Institute of Chartered Accountants in England and Wales, referring to its member companies.

“On the other hand, it is quite possible that a number of business issues will have been identified which the firm can help you with. If that it is the case, your business may find it worthwhile to employ the firm as advisers at a commercial rate agreed between the two of you.”

Michael Izza, ICAEW's chief executive, reflected on why the BAS events –running from June 25th to June 29th, have come about.

“SME growth is crucial to the UK's economic success. In tough economic conditions, small businesses need the right advice and support to succeed,” he said. “It's not just government's responsibility to help businesses to survive and thrive”.
