Rise in unpaid freelance invoices

The pile of outstanding invoices submitted by freelancers in the broadcast industry tops a reported £500,000, representing a 25% increase on the previous year.

According to Broadcast magazine, officials at Bectu are pursing the outstanding half a million-pounds or so for work carried out in 2011, with unpaid sums per invoice ranging from £1,000 to £15,000.

Post-production houses and independents were blamed for the bad debt, which the broadcast union reportedly predicts is set to see further “significant” increases in the year ahead.

In response, Bectu’s next Freelancers’ Fair in June is expected to host a session to tackle the issue, which in one case has seen a single freelancer lose out on £32,000.
