Travel photographers called to compete

Nikon wants to shower photographers who think they’ve captured something unique for the world of travel photography with exotic trips, cash and cameras.

Having teamed up with Wanderlust, the adventure and travel magazine, the camera-maker has opened a competition for both amateur and professional photographers alike.

Four photographers from the amateur category will be jetted off to capture serene South Australia, while the winner of the new Portfolio category receives £5,000 cash.

Amateurs must submit up to four images in one or more of the following categories: People, Wildlife, Landscape or Festivals.

To be a winner, photographers must reflect the overall theme of travel in their image as well as interpreting the category concept in a unique way.

All winners and short-listed entrants can also bask in the exposure of showcasing their photos in Wanderlust, The Independent and at Destinations 2008, the UK travel show.

Nikon will award a range of cameras as prizes for highly commended and runner-up amateurs, including compact, design-led and consumer digital SLR products.

The new Portfolio category is open both to professional photographers and those amateur photographers who “think their work can make the grade when judged on professional criteria,” Nikon said.

This category challenges entrants to put together a set of five eye-catching images, all themed to fit one of the four main categories: People, Wildlife, Landscape or Festivals.

Entrants are warned, however that standards are high: in 2006 the judges decided that none of the portfolios in the Professional category were good enough to win outright.

The panel made the bold decision not to award the first prize, demonstrating that even top photographers find it difficult to edit their own work.

The grand prize of £5,000 will be awarded to the best portfolio of travel images, with a prize of £1,000 plus a Nikon camera going to a lucky runner-up and a “highly commended” entry.

For details of rules and how to enter, pick up a copy of the August/September edition of Wanderlust. Full terms and conditions can be downloaded from www.wanderlust.co.uk/photocomp or can be obtained by sending a stamped addressed envelope to Wanderlust, PO Box 1832, Windsor SL4 1YT.

The closing date for entries is December 1 2007.
