Online-only course in freelance journalism

The first freelance journalism course to be taught entirely over the internet with a guarantee that students will go on to be published and paid is open for enrolment.

The British College of Journalism’s online course for talented writers will even refund the difference if their first three assignments fail to make back the enrolment fee.

As a minimum, students “can expect to be published by the end” of the course, which is available part-time or full-time over 12 or 24 weeks, and costs £410, the BCJ said.

Upon completion, students will receive a Diploma in Professional Freelance Journalism, with full refunds promised in the event that they do not qualify.

As part of the training, the budding freelance will develop their own story ideas, edit them from first draft to finished copy, and submit them to newspapers and magazines.

To help them, the students will be assigned a tutor specialising in the area they wish to freelance, who will also offer local, up-to-date, market knowledge on their field.

“Stated simply, you’ll know how to write and sell a vast range of subject matter to the thousands of newspapers and magazines that buy freelance material,” the BCJ said.

“The course is not only structured to teach you the techniques of freelance journalism. It's also intended to get you published and paid for your efforts.”

To this end, the course will also cover how to write for the internet, newsletters and publicity, providing a “guaranteed way to earn income from anywhere in the world”.
