Dragon backs Big Issue launch in Lahore

For a publication that started out as a monthly only sold by ten vendors in London, the Big Issue has come a long way, steered by its co-founder and editor John Bird.

But seemingly not content with already hitting the streets in nine capital cities, the editor of the now-weekly magazine has announced a plan to take it to Lahore.

The Big Issue’s debut into Pakistan is tipped to be followed by its launch in Bangladesh and India, with all versions expected to be based on the UK model.

Initially the magazine will only be available online , but should appear in hard copy by early next year. Any bumps to that process and Bird has a high-profile insider to call on.

“James Caan is interested in helping out in Lahore,” Bird told City Am, pointing to the Dragons’ Den investor and recruitment tycoon.

“It’s really important to have someone on board with connections to the country, so his experience will be invaluable.”

Bird will also need to draw on his experience, which includes sleeping rough, given that the recession has meant the number of people living on the streets from London to Lahore has increased.

He said: “Nowhere in the world needs The Big Issue like Pakistan right now."

The Big Issue set up in 1991 and is a street magazine already sold in nine countries including Australia, the Republic of Ireland, South Africa, Japan, Namibia, Kenya and Malawi.
