A new website is revealing the unseen side of flexible employment - home-workers proudly doing business in their pyjamas.
The National Pyjama Club says it is a light-hearted response to the growing number of Britons who are working from home and donning ‘PJs’ instead of suits.
Free membership of the site lets people upload pictures of themselves working at home – with the only stipulation being that they appear in their pyjamas or dressing gown.
At the time of writing, visitors to the site could see a pyjama-wearing recruiter, researcher and tycoon. But accountants in pyjamas were yet to show themselves.
“They have the traditional image of not really being game for a laugh,” dared Karen Kennard, the founder of The National Pyjama Club, speaking to FreelanceUK yesterday.
“I thought there might be some out there to prove us all wrong – but none so far. Interestingly, though, the accountants’ album has actually had the most hits”.
Despite admitting her site was a bit of fun, Ms Kennard said she hoped it would still raise awareness about the dedication of home-workers.
“People who are working in their pyjamas are doing it because they get up and get on with their work. We are not showing pictures of people sitting in front of the TV in their PJs, but actually in their offices.”
Based on her own experience, she said working flexibly and remotely was more productive than working in the traditional office set-up, partly because it required more focus.
Either this was because home-workers wanted to “prove their value” for being given the luxury of not commuting, or it was because they were busy looking after their business.
Asked for her top tip to creative freelancers who want to be the site’s first pyjama-clad Web designer, tech type or writer, she offered: “Comb your hair!”
National Pyjama Club said it has no plans to monetise the site, which was created by a friend of the founder who shared her vision of professionals in pyjamas.
