Second Life, the virtual economy that can pay real-world dividends, is calling freelance developers to build its greatest ever application or in-game project.
Makers Linden Lab will award one developer, or their team, $10,000 for the feature that best improves the lives of Second Life residents when they are offline.
The application should help Second Lifers “work, learn and communicate” to be in with a chance of winning the “largest vendor-sponsored award in the virtual world.”
It should also be in the spirit of work on the Second Life Grid, a technology platform for virtual application building, credited for extending SL’s reach beyond its borders.
In September, for example, Linden Labs announced a new voice and IM tool that lets residents communicate with other residents whether or not they are in-game.
Judges for the newly unveiled Linden prize, to be given annually, will remain anonymous, but will include thought-leaders and employees of Linden Lab.
They need to receive entries from interested developers, who must hold a SL account, by January 15, 2009, in order to announce the finalists and grand winner in April.
