A hand-woven carpet so big it could host a championship game of professional football has been unrolled in Iran.
Measuring 5,625 square metres, the Qasr al-Alam (The Palace of the World) will need to be flown by two separate planes when it is taken to a mosque in Abu Dhabi.
Already hailed as the world’s biggest hand-made carpet, the monumental floor covering will need to be stitched back together before it can be laid in the mosque’s prayer hall in the UAE.
It reportedly took Ali Khaliqi, an Iranian artist, eight months to design, further to the weaving efforts of 1,200 women, who tied 2.2bn knots and used 38 tonnes of mothproof wool and cotton.
A technical team of 50 men were then hired to oversee the weaving, which The Times reported took 16 months at the hands of the women, all of whom were aged between 15 and 60.
The sheer size of the carpet, which is mainly green with Persian motifs, was illustrated this week when press photographers had to board helicopters in order to fully capture its image.
