Tax help for flood victims

The taxman is showing understanding to the thousands of people caught up Britain’s worst flood crisis in modern times.

Her Majesty’s Revenue & Customs has now set up a new Helpline (0845 3000 157) to offer affected people practical help and fast advice on a range of tax problems.

Reassuringly for individuals in business, the government said last week that HMRC will waive interest and surcharges on tax paid late due to the floods.

The commissioners will exercise their discretionary power not to collect such interest and surcharges in the interim, while the collection of some taxes will also be deferred.

For those located in flooded areas, the government has suspended debt collection, compliance checks and investigations

Moreover, practical solutions will be offered to individuals and businesses that have lost tax records in the flooding.
