Designer to modernise judges' gowns

The clothing entrepreneur Betty Jackson has agreed to act as a design consultant on the new gowns to be worn by judges in British civil courts.

Known more for her clothing line in Debenhams, and for being admired by pop band All Saints, the British designer may seem an unlikely candidate to help the judiciary.

But disclosures obtained by The Guardian claim that in line with next season’s minimalist trend, Jackson has ideas for “plainer, simpler gowns” for both sexes of judges.

Lord Philips, the lord chief justice, reportedly told the lord mayors dinner in London on Tuesday night that it was “marvellous” that Jackson was lending her expertise on a pro-bono basis.

He said: “I have been very impressed with the professionalism that Betty has brought to the design exercise. I am confident that our new gowns will be the envy of the Commonwealth.”
