Alan Johnston, the BBC’s Gaza correspondent, has been filmed by his kidnappers parading in an explosives belt identical to the kind used by suicide bombers.
The Briton wears an orange jump suit similar to those worn by detainees at Guantanamo Bay in the video, which was uploaded to a militant website, presumably on Sunday.
Some press reports suggest strapping the 45-year-old with explosives could be a hint that his captors will use him as a human shield, if militants bulldoze the area he is being held in.
The BBC said the video was “distressing” and repeated calls for the reporter not to be harmed, saying he should be released immediately.
Alan Johnston has been held captive longer than any other individual in the Palestinian territories. He was snatched by gunmen on March 12, 2007.
