Author's signature stretches across the pond

Creative types can’t and won’t always get to grips with the latest in technology.

But the American author Dean Koontz, who dislikes flying so much he’s never visited Britain, broke the mould on Saturday - to break his communication barrier with his fans across the pond.

Using a device invented by fellow author Margaret Atwood, Koontz signed copies of his book The Good Guy for fans at Waterstones in Piccadilly, from the comfort of his own home in California.

He used the LongPen – the first ever long distance, pen-and-ink signing device, that lets a user scribble on an e-tablet, which then activates a robotic hand overseas to recreate his signature.

Koontz is thought to be the world’s first author to use the carbon-neutral device, which enables booklovers worldwide to have contact with authors they would never otherwise meet.
