UK is 'no.1 spender on Web ads'

The UK is leading Europe’s adoption of online advertising, having spent more on the medium in 2006 than any other member state.

Such is the verdict from the first ever pan-European online advertising study into the spending of 13 nations, authored by the Internet Advertising Bureau.

The study shows that last year, online advertising spend among the bureau’s European members climbed to €8.003 billion, with search advertising taking the biggest share.

The UK accounted for the largest share of online ad spend, and was responsible for over a third of total expenditure, suggesting it forked out over €3.101bn in 12 months.
Germany and France are the second and third biggest spenders on online ads, with each nation spending around $1.7 bn over the same period.

Netherlands is the continent’s fourth largest market (€564.3 million), closely followed by Italy(€480.2 million).
Spain; Denmark; Belgium; Austria; Finland; Greece; Slovenia and Croatia account for the remaining 12% of revenues, netting a total of €927 million.
