A smart breed of speed camera, which promises no escape for careless drivers, is tipped to be rolled out across the UK any day now.
Disclosures obtained by Auto Express magazine claim that Gatsometer will install new digital technology into its 4000-strong network of cameras.
Unlike most of today’s speed enforcers, the new 11 megapixels cameras offer high quality images over a dynamic range (12bits) irrespective of the light or weather conditions.
Vehicles observed by the camera will have their registration marks ‘read’ using pattern recognitions software, previously used to target terror suspects and criminals in London.
Each camera boasts a burst rate of four images per second, ensuring that “all offending vehicles are captured, even in high-density traffic,” Gatsometer said.
Because the images can be downloaded via a fixed or wireless internet connection the cameras will be cheaper to maintain, and potentially less appealing to vandals.
To further deter vandals, an in-built monitoring system continually checks on system functionality, and remote personnel will be sounded an alarm if damage occurs.
Offence data, like speed, date, time and vehicle direction, is superimposed in the image, signed and encrypted at real-time to ensure it is tamper-proof.
