After taking power in a coup in September, the authorities are so concerned about global perceptions that a US PR firm has been hired to boost the nation’s image.
Disclosures obtained by Reuters reveal that a three-month charm offensive will take effect immediately, to combat unflattering headlines from the West.
The PR task is compounded by editorial attacks on the nation for overriding drug patents, which has been denounced in an advert in the Wall Street Journal.
According to the agency, Thailand’s current prime minister, Surayud Chulanot, an ex-army chief, has given the go-ahead for the makeover, which will set the nation back £300,000.
He reflected: “The money isn’t much, but we have to do what we have to do.”
