One of the nine million taxpayers covered by self-assessment has missed the deadline of January 31.
Asking the Mail on Sunday whether they now need to rush to file the return, won the individual a professional response.
Published in the paper’s Financial Mail supplement, Mike Warburton of accountants Grant Thornton said: “By missing the deadline you could incur a penalty of £100, but this will be limited to the amount of tax that is due.
If you have paid all your tax for the year, you will receive a penalty notice. You can appeal and need not pay immediately.
If there is any tax outstanding, it is important that you pay it by February 28, after which a 5% surcharge will apply.
You should send in your tax return as soon as you can, but you should not rush the preparation. It is better to have the return a bit late than incorrect.”
