The government’s advertising budget has soared, surpassing the amount of cash spent on marketing by giants like Tesco, M&S and even Publicis.
In fact, new figures released on Monday showed that last year a cool £137million was spent on ads by the state – the equivalent of £4.50 every second.
Obtained by The Independent, the full figures were reportedly attacked by Oliver Heald, the shadow constitutional affairs minister.
“Taxes have soared, but rather than improving our public services, the money has been wasted on the wages of ‘spin,’” he said.
However some success has been achieved by the government, evidenced by the Publicis campaign for the British Army, which resulted in 30,000 people enquiring within three weeks.
Less positively, an e-gov awareness campaign was launched to the tune of £5million, but a study subsequently found demand for Direct.gov.uk – the government’s central portal – remained static.
