Internet traders gearing up for Christmas could be in line for the biggest ever seasonal windfall, according to an online retail analyst.
Predictions from IMRG suggest consumers will spend an estimated £7billion online during the ten-week run-up to Christmas Day.
The prediction comes on the back of the fastest growing 12 months for e-retail in Britain, and after the biggest ever month for online sales in the UK.
In fact, consumers spent a record £2.7bn during October – almost £250,000 more than the previous record of December, according to the Interactive Media in Retail Group.
The group’s figures also show that, for the first 10 months this year, e-retail leapt by an average of £50million every month, compared with £16million a month the same time two years ago.
Pointing to recent figures from APACS, the analyst said December is expected to reflect ongoing habits among consumers, indicating debit cards will be the most popular method payment.
Total UK spending on cards, cash and cheques is tipped to reach £51.6 billion during December.
For next year, when broadband and internet security will both be more mature, IMRG reportedly expects online sales in the UK to rise by 40% to £42billion - up from £30billion this year.
