Photographers focus on eight 'dynamic' shots

Freelance photographers and their aspiring peers have less than one working week to compete for this year’s Hodge Photographic Award to be in with a chance of wining £5,000.

Launched by The Observer, the deadline for the annual competition, which is in tribute to photographer David Hodge who died covering the Brixton riots, is on Friday.

Anyone age 29 or under can enter the competition, which promises to award one emerging talent with the opportunity to embark on an all-expenses-paid assignment for the newspaper.

The victor will also receive their share of a £15,000 prize fund and have their 8 winning images showcased in an exhibition in central London in November.

Submitted portfolios must fall within the category of reportage, documentary photographer or portraiture to stand a chance of being judged by a panel of eight industry heavyweights.

The panel, which includes Rageh Omaar, the former BBC journalist and Roger Alton, editor of The Observer, will be looking for “dynamic” images in an “arresting” portfolio, “which portrays a compelling narrative.”

All winners will receive a state-of-the art Olympus E-system camera, while four runners up will receive cash prizes, in categories such as Student and Digital photographer of the Year.
