Google offers DIY web design

Freelance business owners are trying their hand at a new online tool that lets them create and publish web pages without the normal expense of website design.

Launched by search site Google, the free facility empowers freelancers to make and edit web pages exactly as they appear online, without the need for HTML or complex software.

The free software is currently in testing mode or ‘beta,’ meaning it will be adapted and improved to suit users’ needs as and when they send suggestions to Google.

The initial roll out is only open to internet users with a Gmail account, but a stampede of early sign-ups has forced Google to suspend the service.

“Due to extraordinary demand, we have temporarily paused additional sign-ups. We expect to offer sign-ups again very soon. Users may check the Google Page Creator website regularly for updates or submit their email address to a wait list.”

Google said it will then contact the individual at a time when “we have the capacity to support additional users.”

Upon composing a web page, the finished product will be accessible via the Google search engine, while it will also be found at http://yourgmailusername.googlepages.com

Google said with no download necessary, creating a web page via its new service should become as easy as typing up a document.

“Page Creator is a free tool that lets you create web pages right in your browser and publish them to the web with one click,” the search company said.

“There's no software to download and no web designer to hire.”
