Our goal is to supply women with helpful, authoritative,
relatable information that is fresh, fun and smart.
We are currently looking for writers in the areas of celebrity news, TV, and features based in the United Kingdom.
REQUIREMENTS
* Journalism/reporting experience. This is not about scratching the surface, but actually calling/developing/meeting with sources and doing extensive, authoritative research that advances our readers' knowledge. We are a magazine, not a blog.
* Must write with wit, color and voice. If you cannot keep me entertained from start to finish, you need not apply. Your writing style must sing, jump off the page and sound intelligent. It also must uphold the integrity of SheKnows. We are not in the business of fabricating stories or creating malicious rumors.
* Knowledge of basic photo editing. You will be required to find and enter your own photos based on our sizing guidelines. As such, you must understand how to crop and resize a photo properly.
* TV writers must have a background in TV coverage. Everyone can watch TV - but I need someone who can write intelligently about it, draw comparisons, pull stats and confirm with TV industry sources.
* Grammar snobbery. Writers MUST be able to submit squeaky-clean, ready-to-publish articles. That means impeccable knowledge of grammar, AP style, punctuation and spelling.
* Creativity. We want people who are brimming with ideas/clever angles and are not shy about suggesting new ways to keep our readers coming back.
HUGE PLUSES:
* Online writing experience -- even better if you have worked in a CMS, Wordpress, etc.
* Knowledge of SEO (search engine optimization) and how to leverage this in your articles
* Prior beat coverage of or expertise in one or more of the aforementioned entertainment topics we are hiring for.
* Strong knowledge of social networking and/or a strong following on Facebook and Twitter
* Strong sources in the entertainment world, whether it's celebrity publicists or major publishing companies, film production studios, etc.
THE JOB:
These are all part-time, freelance positions.
Frequency: Article post frequency is TBD, but plan on doing around 1-5 posts per day.
Word Count: If it's a quick news post, then about 100-300 words. If it's a feature article, between 400 and 600 words.
Submission Guidelines: You will be required to enter your own articles into our CMS (content management system), which is accessible from anywhere that has an internet connection. We will train you in proper CMS entry, but if you are not savvy with computers, this is not the job for you. You will be required to add appropriate links and tags to your articles, along with any additional media, like photos and videos.
Tracking Trends: Part of this job will involve keeping a constant finger on the pulse of what's trending on search engines and a willingness to jump on major relevant topics quickly, cover them thoroughly, and also keep in mind that the quicker you post, the greater our chances of racking up page views.
Breaking News: The second part is writing stories that actually START the trend on Google and get people buzzing. This is where the reporting comes into play.
Clever Angles: The third part is coming up with cool, fun, piquant angles that will not only bring readers to our site via Google, but get them coming back. I always welcome ideas from my contractors on how we can improve the content, and no idea is too small or too big.
Rates: We generally pay $10 USD per article. If you are interested and meet the above requirements, send a resume and cover letter with strong argument for why I should hire you. Show off your writing voice. Please no boring, corporate, sterile cover letters. Please also send 3-4 gorgeously written, irresistibly clever, published writing samples related to your area(s) of interest. No college English essay or a simple email asking for more info about the job. This is your chance to shine. No spam, please.
